Endurance Nation

  • I am coached by Endurance Nation. EN has proven to be the most effective, value-filled coaching option I have ever used. I am over the moon about this program, the coaching, and the gains I am making. These smart guys have created a nation of interconnected athletes that motivate, inspire and hold you accountable. It's like 1:1 coaching for a fraction of the price. You won't believe the value for your membership--free ebooks, podcasts, webinars, blogs, videos, white papers--you name it. Check them out. Better yet, join!

Bodywork Revolution

  • Steve Cunningham of Bodywork Revolution is the central reason why I can get through Ironman training in one piece. No one is as good a bodyworker as Steve. No one. The nuero-stretch class he offers is so good, my teenagers don't miss it! Check it out. He also offers acupuncture, massage, meditation classes, and traditional Chinese medicine.

Endurance Nation Podcast Interview with Moi!

Here's a fun interview I did the other day with Coach Rich from Endurance Nation. It's a look at my personal life, and a rundown of some of the highlights I have had with EN over the past 18 months, including that terrific Ironman Florida PR of 1:30+!

EN is doing a "Meet the Team" series of podcasts with a number of athletes. They're fun to listen to and reveal the gamut of athletes we have in "da haus"--all very cool people. Head over to the blog, have a listen, and see if you might want to be part of a really great crew!

Pedal For Peace 2008 Makes It Home! 4,353 Miles Across the U.S.

Pedal for Peace 2008 made it home on Friday! Following his college graduation, my son Ryan pedaled across the United States for a grand adventure, and to raise money for the micro-credit organization FINCA International in Nicaragua. He will return to that country next month to put his funds to work for the most impoverished. You can read all about the trip and donate to the cause on the Pedal for Peace 2008 blog. Here are a few picks from his homecoming!

Cliff Notes of a few details:

Total miles: 4,353
Today Pedaling Days: 49
Average Per Day: 88.8 miles
Bike: Dad's 20 yr old Lemond road bike. When you are 22, and budgeting this on your own, you ride what you can get! Consensus--touring bike would have been better.

Best States: This takes in account weather, road surfaces, miles between services (they were self-supported), and terrain.
#1 Colorado
#2 New York
#3 Ohio

Worst States: Using same criteria:
#1 California
#2 Arizona
#3 Utah

Free Money and Swag: People being kind to travelers kicked in about $50 cash, free food, bike shirts, water bottles, and camp sites.

About 20 flats (Pete had one, Ryan the rest), many new tires, one new wheel, many truings at LBSs across the US.

Budget per day: $10-20, except for the occasional hotel room every 1000 miles. The sense of accomplishment and friendship between these two--priceless.

Keith and I met Ryan at then end of our bike path on Friday, and rode the last few miles home together to our house. First the road was empty, then there they were coming down the hill. Made me tear up for sure. It was so good to see them.

KLR BIke Path

Pete and Ryan just arriving at the bike path. A note about the beard thing...(Doesn't that look awful???!!!) Unbeknown to me, he vowed not to shave until they made it back. Pete did that last summer on a salmon boat, and decided not to try that again. You just have to love boys. My son does not "give a what" that it looks so bad. It was part of the quest, so there you have it.

His brothers were so happy to see him! Here's Ryan and next oldest bro upon arrival.

Even the bros are horrified at the beard!

We had party after party! It was the homecoming that never ends! Friday night dinner for 12 at our house. Then a gathering at our summer pool where Pete and Ryan worked together for many years as lifeguards, and cooked up this whole adventure. It was the first ceremonial dipping of the wheels to end the trip.

PRP Dip

On Sunday, we headed into Boston for the final wheel dip in the Atlantic to call this thing a wrap. Here are Pete and Ryan all decked out out for the final shirtless ride to the Charlestown Navy Yard and the dock of the USS Constitution. (Off they head down our ripped up road where construction never ends!) It was a beautiful day...

R and R Ride Sunday

...beautiful day until we got to Charlestown! It was torrential for 3 full hours with cracking thunder and lightening like Armegeddon! Between Pete and Ryan, we had about 50 friends and fam there. It was great fun, but we were all soaking wet!

Tent/Rain

The wheel dipping in the Atlantic finally happens, and here are two soaked but happy guys!

Trip is done, bike to be racked for a while, and onto life's next challenge! Add to the equation, happy sets of parents that the boys are home!

My Son Cycling Across the U.S.--Pedal for Peace 2008

Background_7

R to L--Nueva Guinea, Nicaragua; Pedal for Peace Route; Son Ryan in white and friend Pete.

PEDAL FOR PEACE 2008

I wanted to share some exciting information about my son Ryan. Just today he began a cross-country bicycle adventure with his friend Pete Driscoll. They departed San Diego, and will wheel their way back to New England within the next two months. They plan on 65 days of riding. It's a completely self-supported endeavor, done on a just-graduated-from-college student budget! That means lots of open-air camping and sleeping on friend's couches when they can.

Join_campaign The best part of the trip is that my son took the time to build a web site--Pedal for Peace 2008--to turn the ride into a fundraiser for FINCA International and their Village Banking system of microfinance for the world's most impoverished people. The money Ryan is able to raise through Pedal for Peace 2008 will directly support microfinance loans to the very poor in Nueva Guinea, Nicaragua. Most of the loan recipients are women, and sometimes the loans are for as little as $50. $50, however, can help buy additional chickens so the women can see the eggs, or perhaps buy shoe repair equipment to launch a small business. These loans often make the difference between families eating or not.

Ryan_nica_family Ryan spent six months in Nicaragua, the second poorest country in the western hemisphere. (Haiti is the poorest.) He attended university in Managua, then moved with FINCA field workers to live in Nueva Guinea for several months to help establish village banks in this remote region. He saw directly the positive impact microfinance has on the very poor, particularly women. He plans to go back to Nicaragua for three months when he returns from the ride.

I'm very proud of my fine son, and hope you will check out Pedal for Peace 2008 and donate if you are so moved. The site is up in partnership with FINCA, and the donation link goes directly to that organization--no middle man. And since 98%+ of the loans are repaid, it is truly the gift that keeps on giving. Be assured the money raised goes to help those who live as the poorest of the poor through no fault of their own.

Wheel_dip_ca  I'll be posting updates as they come in. Here's the first! Pete and Ryan dip the bike wheels in the Pacific Ocean. They will end their ride when they are able to dip the wheels in the Atlantic when home again in New England!

Don't Stop Believing

  • My kids picked Journey's "Don't Stop Believing" as the theme for Ironman '06. As they hoisted the sign at the swim start, I thought, "Oh yeah, I'm going to make it!"

You Can Get It If You Really Want

  • The boys chose Jimmy Cliff's "You Can Get It If You Really Want" as the anthem for Ironman '08. Need a lift? Motivation? This will be the best three minutes of your day! Take a listen. "You must try...try and try..."
